The Patchills Centre is owned and managed by Brunts Charity and provides sheltered accomodation to the elderly in the form of 158 properties (25 flats and 133 bungalows).
It benefits from a large community centre from where site wardens are based that runs fitness classes, bingo and a lunch club.
The 17 year old kitchens within the flats were in desperate need of an upgrade.
Brunts Charity approached EEM to assist with the procurement of a contractor to undertake these works. Matthews & Tannert were selected from the EEM framework for the installation of kitchens and bathrooms due to their locality and the suitability of works.
Rixonway Kitchens were selected to provide the units due to them being EEM’s compliantly procured manufacturer.
A total of 23 flats and a bungalow required kitchen upgrades within The Patchills complex.
The kitchens were emptied of white goods and cooking appliances and re-connected elsewhere for use where possible. All existing kitchen units, worktops, sink, tiling and other wall coverings, flooring, skirting boards were stripped out. Walls received new plaster skim and new curtain battens were fitted.
Rixonway kitchen units (Trieste Range) were installed (up to 8 units per kitchen) with soft close drawers. New kitchen work tops and supports were installed to pre-determined specifications. New sinks were installed as well as uPVC window cill board and new cooker restraint chains.
Floor Covering & Decoration
New vinyl flooring was fitted, as selected from the range by the tenant. Walls, ceilings & woodwork were decorated with two coats of emulsion paint, as selected by the tenant.
The kitchens were re-wired and tested upon completion with certificates issued.
The flats were occupied by elderly tenants who required minimal disruption.
Communication was key, so all tenants were briefed in advance so they knew what to expect.
As the flats are occupied, white goods and other items were re-connected in the living rooms and other locations so they could still be utilised. Tenants were also able to access the communal kitchen area.
A quick turnaround was required to minimise disruption so a timeline of 7-10 days per 4-6 kitchens was established. Although there was a slight delay in some of the materials being delivered, Matthews & Tannert managed to work around the issues and still complete the project on time.
A co-ordination schedule was set up to allow skimmers, plasterers, electricians, kitchen fitters, tilers, flooring fitters and decorators to complete their works as efficiently as possible.
Certains works were sub-contracted so quality control needed to be closely monitored. Brunts Charity were pleased to see any issues were addressed and corrected promptly by Matthews & Tannert.
The kitchens were successfully completed within the timeframe, before the busy Christmas period.
Brunts Charity consider this to be an investment into the well-being of the residents as well as the infrastructure of the complex. They recognise the positive impact these works have had on the morale and social well being of the tenants.
Brunts had not previously worked with Matthews & Tannert but following this successful project, more works have been awarded to the local contractor.
