Mears work with EEM to achieve more benefits for EEM members based on ‘shared values’

January 11th, 2018 by

This year will mark the start of an initiative between EEM and one of its member contractors, Mears Group PLC, which will increase the annual throughput on materials by at least £40m.

This initiative will benefit all EEM members, putting us in a stronger position during 2018/19 negotiations. The plan could be officially launched at one of Mears’ Thought Leadership Conferences in the new year, giving the round-table style event the chance to discuss material pricing and identifying the best ways for the initiative to work.

Previously sceptical about procurement consortia, Ian Watson, Mears’ Procurement Director, said it was meeting EEM Chief Executive, Pete Smith, that changed his mind.

“Frankly before meeting Pete, I was always at odds with other procurement consortia I’d met. I couldn’t understand how they were going to add value to our business. But Pete’s not-for-profit mantra, giving the surplus back to members for community gain, meant it was just a no-brainer for me.

“EEM’s transparent and simple approach; ensuring every member, however big or small, still benefits from the same savings, along with their focus on communities and giving back to end users, really aligns with our own values as a company. Neither us or EEM makes a profit on the materials we buy, ensuring every saving made is passed back to the communities we serve.

“As a company we are also very committed to communities, offering every one of our employees the option to take two free days a year to complete voluntary work in our local communities. Knowing how strongly EEM feels about giving back to these communities, we felt working with them was a very natural move.”

Mears, which works on more than a million properties across the country, provides a range of services to its customers, from repairs and maintenance, to estate services, planned maintenance, new build, home improvement and housing management services.

Pete Smith, EEM’s Chief Executive, said: “We’re delighted to be working alongside Mears Group. We do truly share the same values and know the importance of supporting the organisations we work for, providing ultimate benefits to the customers.

“I look forward to working with the Mears team to maximise the benefits for all of the EEM members as we move forward into 2018. It’s going to be a fantastic year.”
