whg (Walsall Housing Group) have donated their Community Donation to Walsall ACE Project.

Alison Matthews, Employment & Skills Manager at whg said

"Thank you so much for your wonderful EEM Community Donation to whg, we are extremely grateful and have definitely put this money to good use for the wider benefit of our customers.

This donation has been used to contribute to a Walsall ACE Project led by whg (ACE stands for assisting children to exceed)  that sees whg colleagues work with whg families living in deprived areas of Walsall and to provide them with school uniform, winter coats and school shoes.  We use our intelligence to target families impacted by the high cost of living and who may be in rent arrears and experiencing high debt levels some of which are in work and earning low wages and do not solely rely on receiving benefits so have no access to free school uniforms.

We do this as the cost of school uniforms can make the start of term very stressful for some families who may be  forced to apply for high interest  loans or go without food or heating to ensure their children have the right items  for school.

Research by the Children’s Society indicates that 23% of parents have had to send their child to school in worn,  ill-fitting or the wrong school uniform. This can Iead to children being bullied,  feeling left out and, in some instances being sent home and excluded from school through no fault of their own.

This project supported by your donation has therefore provided much needed practical support to families while also offering parents opportunities to improve their situation in the future. Therefore, alongside providing school uniforms  parents will be able to access help  from whg’s Social Prescribing team who will support them to increase their confidence and skills. They can then move onto support from whg’s Employment and Training team who can help parents into work or into improved employment opportunities such as skills training."
